Our Story

New Earth Gardens (NEG) works alongside New Earth Recovery (NER) in the Skagit Valley. NER’s mission is to love, strengthen, and accompany those in recovery from addiction through new community, faith-based support groups, advocacy, and pastoral care. The mission of NEG is to provide healthy supportive employment to the men in the Trust (NER’s men’s house).

NEG’s objective is threefold: 1.) To provide a healthy alternative for an introduction back into work for men in the Trust. 2.) To grow high quality vegetables in a very sustainable way. And 3.) To teach our neighbors, friends, and fellow christians the importance of creation care and how this is inextricably tied to “love of our neighbors.”

While we use broad permaculture practices to design our overall property, NEG uses bio-intensive practices of growing vegetables, which involves building permanent raised, deeply loosened beds rich in compost and overall life in the soil (hence bio-intensive).

We are not “certified” organic. Taking that into account, we must become more creative and precise with our language as different power structures take ownership of certain words. We’d now say that we use “beyond organic” practices. Though, you’d have to come out to one of our work days to see and hear about what that means!
